@theDoctor Yeah, there are of course the small minority of trips that are both very important and practically impossible without flying. But if the reasons are important enough, they can be subsidized by the state.

Similarly HPC access is too expensive for individuals but the state pays for the use for people who have good enough reasons, e.g. meteorology. Same kind of process would work for flying.

@theDoctor I argue that if the scientific community would actively steer away from in-person conferences, that would be better for science, even without the ecological benefits. First, they overwhelmingly favor extroverts, and second, every time there are thousands of euros at stake, there are serious class issues even if universities pay.

Julia Steinberger makes this argument better here: jksteinberger.medium.com/thing

As for vacations, trains work great, especially in Europe.

@theDoctor We are heading toward an ecological disaster because the wealthy minority of people on this planet have these kinds of wants or "needs".

Flying in particular is mostly a luxury hobby of super elite. The overwhelming majority of of people has never flown.

As for the policies: carbon taxes would be the obvious solution.

In EU, 6% of flights are >4000km, but burn 47% of fuel.

While ending short flights is also needed, the #1 target for flight emission reductions should be to disincentivize Europeans from flying out of Europe.

@kev I'm very sorry to ask about the exact thing you said not to, but this is really interesting to me. By "conspiracy theory" do you mean you think planned obsolescence:

a) does not exist,
b) is not something Apple does, or
c) does not (yet) affect your phone?

Again, sorry to ask and don't want to debate anything, but just haven't seen "conspiracy theory" together with planned obsolescence, and would like to know more.

I can so relate to this excellent piece by Mary Annaïse Heglar.

"Here’s my confession: I don’t care how green you are. I want you in the movement for climate justice."

I thought for a while that meat substitutes would be the exception in ecological actions where a market solution just might work. I'm not as hopeful anymore.

Meat needs to be taxed to make it significantly more expensive than vegan alternatives.

Meanwhile in : there is hardly a whisper anywhere that Jorma Ollila – our revered executive of 90s Nokia glory – was the chairman of Shell from 2006 to 2015 and oversaw and led this destruction of our planet.

@ericireland@aus.social @porsupah Indeed, that would be a much better slogan to put next to the quote by Davis.
