Politics, Finland, indigenous rights

Not enough international attention has been given to the current fight for a new law to protect the indigenous Sámi people in .

The colonial arguments by the Centre Party hoping to maintain oppression and continued human rights violations have been sickening – not to mention all of the racist attacks against individuals Sámi.

The law needs to finally pass after decades of delays.

@graue I'd start by asking how much of the leaf blowing should be done in the first place – not how to make wasting energy and human effort less loud.

Is it just me or is it hard for anyone else to relate to the problem that it makes too much noise to move leaves around on my backyard tennis court?

This is what's wrong with Silicon Valley.

Activists of Finland are blocking the road to the construction site of a massive new pulp mill in northern Finland.

If built the mill will cause devastating biodiversity loss, reduction of carbon stock, and destruction of reindeer pastures and the indigenous cultural heritage of the Sami.

Metsä Group and other major forestry corporations must scale down their production and reduce logging immediately.

"Imperial mode of living" aptly describes those desirable everyday practices, that rely on:

"(i) the unlimited appropriation of resources; (ii) a
disproportionate claim to global and local ecosystems and sinks; and (iii) cheap labour from
elsewhere."

@theDoctor Yeah, there are of course the small minority of trips that are both very important and practically impossible without flying. But if the reasons are important enough, they can be subsidized by the state.

Similarly HPC access is too expensive for individuals but the state pays for the use for people who have good enough reasons, e.g. meteorology. Same kind of process would work for flying.

@theDoctor I argue that if the scientific community would actively steer away from in-person conferences, that would be better for science, even without the ecological benefits. First, they overwhelmingly favor extroverts, and second, every time there are thousands of euros at stake, there are serious class issues even if universities pay.
