Some good personal news.

My first leg as an independent activist is coming to a planned end after two and a half years.

I had already accepted a return to increasing shareholder value in order to fund the second leg, when a few months ago I noticed Greenpeace International was looking for a software engineer to join a remote team. And I managed to get the job!

So I'm very proud to say that for at least the next 12 months, I'll be writing software to increase the impact of Greenpeace.

@maggiemaybe

I'm not opposing, redistribution of wealth is definitely needed.

At the same time, and after many years of reading and acting, I don't believe in "vote green and wait". Appealing to power to fix climate change has been tried now for thirty years, and it's not working.

I now only believe in a mass movement of ordinary people demanding change, and replacing the people power.

That's why pushing everyday people from worry to action, like Hayhoe says, is crucial.

@largess @kathhayhoe

You can reference existing research in fields outside your expertise. Do you e.g. see something wrong with how Hayhoe summarizes the climate change questionnaire results?

For a topic as completely interdisclipinary as climate change, I don't believe there are (enough) specific experts, to expect Hayhoe to be silent.

Now, it of course would be great to hear from Kahneman too, but he isn't an expert on climate communications, which is what this talk is about.

This wonderful talk by @kathhayhoe gives good insights on why just telling people the facts will not stop .

The goal for today (especially in the Global North) isn't to get everyone worried – a big majority of people already are. The goal is to change that worry into action.

To do that, more emphasis is needed on what (personally relevant) better future people should fight for, instead of what they should stop doing to prevent harm.

“To be a mass tourist, for me, is ... to spoil, by way of sheer ontology, the very unspoiledness you are there to experience, It is to impose yourself on places that in all non-economic ways would be better, realer, without you. It is, in lines and gridlock and transaction after transaction, to confront a dimension of yourself that is as inescapable as it is painful: As a tourist, you become economically significant but existentially loathsome, an insect on a dead thing.”

Degrowthin etymologia on minusta upea (degrowth.info/degrowth) :

"Reading just the word, it has a negative, and for some, a non-ecological connotation. But the origin of the term is anything but that. It is to be found in Latin languages, where “la dĂ©croissance” in French or “la decrescita” in Italian refer to a river going back to its normal flow after a disastrous flood."

Joen paluu takaisin uomiinsa tulvan jÀlkeen on minusta tÀydellinen mielikuva. Harmi ettei kÀÀnny!

@jonne Globaalisti toimiva (kuukausittainen) maksaminen on yhÀ edelleen niin vaikea toteuttaa ja yllÀpitÀÀ sekÀ teknisesti ettÀ luotettavan nÀköisesti, joten joku taho melkein vÀlttÀmÀttÀ tarvitaan vÀliin, jos rahaa haluaa.

Gianluca Grimalda was just fired because he refused to fly back to his office in Germany from Papua New Guinea.

This is an example of idiotic company policies, but also an example of a strong moral compass desperately needed amidst .

"Many people will think that it is madness to give up their dream job to avoid taking one flight. But in the current era of climate breakdown, it is, in my opinion, insane to continue with 'business as usual'."
