#CHI2023 is upon us, some expectation management: while #FOMO is the natural emotional state at such a conference, be reminded, if you see 3 papers that inspire you and have 3 encounters that result in a meaningful conversation that makes you think - you are doing very well!
All is good then! “GPT-4 is 82% less likely than GPT-3.5 to respond to requests for content that OpenAI does not allow, and 60% less likely to make stuff up.” https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/03/14/1069823/gpt-4-is-bigger-and-better-chatgpt-openai

#WisdomOfTheCrowd I am looking for studies (#STS, I assume) that look at the influence of the milieu (social, economic, policy, public narratives...) on digital technology that is created? #innovation Thank you!
Three days away from the daily routines has proven incredibly conductive for creative thinking about our research. We are back from our DC Winter School with our #HCI PhDs at the Hackel Hütte

Curious about the #ChatGPT Hype? This is one of the best keynotes at #CogSci by @emilymbender i've seen on the systemic/philosophical
limits of #AI - they don't understand and us ascribing understanding to them is dehumanising https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuU-5rGPbyg

We had a natural experiment. For a few days, we had a custom message on the sign-up page asking people to explain why they want an account specifically on our instance, e.g., what their connection to HCI is. During those days, the quality of explanations was much better👌
Mastodon should do a better job of letting admins customize the language of the sign-up page. It has to be done as part of the localization text, which is quite messy because it’s easily overwritten.

#WisdonOfTheCrowd I am looking for good books that look into the role of #socialmedia or other digital technologies in political #protest (e.g. arab spring, Iran...) Thanks everyone for pointers!

I don't understand why people assume all the things going on in the world is orchestrated by a highly intelligent and nefarious cabal. I mean look around people. Does any of this shit seem organized?
Someone needs to make a really cool video game or movie where the hero finally catches the "bad guy" only to discover it's just some idiot who accidentally made a mess of everything.
I gave a talk at the University of Washington iSchool earlier this week and a couple of folks asked for copies of my slides.
I've given versions of this talk MANY times, but it has a new title! "Remember the human" is one of the first rules of netiquette (also reddiquette) but is also how I've come to think about internet research ethics. https://drive.google.com/file/d/13R2xVhaeJY2Bcn5SFPVrSbeVUohEfK65/view
Well that's a wrap on #CSCW2022! Loren Terveen and I are taking over as general chairs for #CSCW2023 and the planning is already well underway with the help of this awesome organizing committee! @cscw is a @sigchi conference focused on collaborative and social computing, and after our third virtual conference in a row, we are looking forward to welcoming folks back in person next year in Minneapolis! https://cscw.acm.org/2023/

Hey folks on hci.social, is there a way to chip in for server costs?
I'm guessing this little project is getting a bit bigger than you anticipated 😅
